Pecos looks like he knows exactly how far the next town is but will only tell you in units of daylight. Like he has slept outdoors voluntarily for reasons he considers none of your business stop asking.
Eventually the painting and I reached an impasse. I wanted him to become something else. Pecos, quite clearly, did not want to be what I wanted him to be.
So I stopped.
And honestly, looking at him now, I’m beginning to suspect he was right.
