I made this drawing last year for a principal here in Minneapolis. It began as a portrait but became, somewhere along the way, a small tribute to the impossible and mostly invisible work of standing at the threshold between hundreds of children and the enormous world waiting for them.
And now it’s September again.
The backpacks are somehow already carrying their own body weight. The lunchboxes are returning home with everything eaten except the lunch.Parents are relearning the strange choreography of drop-off lines. Teachers and principals are standing beneath buzzing lights, remembering names, calming fears, tying shoes, solving crises, and offering children the daily miracle of being noticed.
Since watching my own kids step back into the rhythms of school on Monday, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about the people waiting on the other side.
The ones who arrive before the hallways wake up. Who stay after the buses pull away. Who carry home far more than lesson plans and ungraded papers.
I know a print is a small thank-you for work this large, but I want to honor the people doing this quiet, civilization-holding work, I’m making this drawing available as a print, with a portion of every sale going to Achieve Twin Cities, an organization that helps students prepare for college, careers and life through personalized support, real-world experiences and connections to their community.
